Some years ago there seemed to be plenty of allotments in Sefton to meet demand. However, over recent years as more and more people have wanted to grow their own food and gain access to the range of health and other benefits that keeping an allotment brings, the supply of allotment plots has proven to be inadequate for current needs.
Sefton seem to have been taken by surprise by the issue and have been slow to respond. Waiting lists for plots are long and the period of time people are on the waiting list is now measured in years - a situation unacceptable to many local residents. Sefton, like all local authorities, have a legal responsibility to provide plots for local people where demand exists. Sadly they have yet to properly rise to the challenge.
As a result, a local group has formed to push the issue up the political agenda. This group is called Southport and District Allotment Group (SADAG) and its growing membership includes both people with plots and those still on the waiting list.
